Artisan Real Estate’s transformation of Edinburgh’s former Caledonian Brewery has taken a step forward, with demolition works underway at the historic Shandon site.
The removal of later additions will prepare the way for redevelopment while retaining the listed buildings that give the brewery its distinctive character.
Founded in 1869, the Caledonian Brewery was an important part of Edinburgh’s industrial life until brewing ceased in 2022. Artisan’s plans will bring the site back into use as a residential neighbourhood, combining new homes with the conversion of existing buildings.

Celebrating the brewery’s heritage
The development will include private and affordable housing, with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Planning permission was granted in May 2025.
Retaining the brewery’s historic fabric is central to the proposals. The scheme brings together the restoration of its Victorian buildings and new residential accommodation, creating a future for the site that recognises its past.

The start of demolition marks a practical milestone in Artisan’s regeneration of this well-known Edinburgh landmark.
